As You Like It

For this production of As You Like It, the concept was that the world of the play existed in a future that isn't that far from where our society is now. Everyone is disconnected from one another and technology has taken over. The natural world is what brings everyone back to their senses and to the happy ending.

My goal with the lighting was to create two vastly different worlds for the contrast of the court and the forest. With the 'civilized' world being so impersonal and based in technology, the court scenes lacked saturated colors and emulated harsh fluorescent lighting that would be in an office. In comparison, the forest was full of texture and color and life that wasn't around at all in the court. This world went from being a similar cold and uninviting in the winter to warm and welcoming as the characters got used to life in the forest and as spring emerged. The wedding took place in a twilight space to give it that extra magic touch for the ending of this comedy.
